A variety of algebras is said to be finitely based if it has a finite basis of its identities. A minimal non-finitely based variety is called limit.

In this talk, I will survey the previous results devoted to the limit varieties of monoids (considered as algebras of type $\langle 2,0\rangle$) and present some new results.
