Esta conjetura foi descoberta em 2016, pelo matemático chinês Zhi-Wei Sun, com base no teorema de Lagrange. Ou melhor, de Joseph-Louis Lagrange, matemático italiano naturalizado francês que, conseguiu, em 1770, um argumento que mostra que há várias maneiras de decompor um qualquer número natural como soma de quatro quadrados.
